From Dental Hygienist to Analyst in a Regional Health Authority

My job search for a non-clinical role in public health took about six months after completing my Master of Public Health program. I set up various job searches through different health authorities and job boards, which notified me of potential jobs that fit what I was looking for. Additionally, I conducted my own job searches daily. I also spent time reaching out to and connecting with different professionals within my field of interest to network and develop relationships.

Ultimately, I found my non-clinical role through LinkedIn’s job recommendations and applied for the position through the health authority’s website. For this role, I was required to complete a written examination to assess my technical skills, along with the more traditional panel interview to evaluate my behavioral competencies and fit for the position. I received an offer for the position shortly after my interview and reference checks.

Overall, I applied for about 20 positions and interviewed for three of them. Each application and interview provided me an opportunity to reassess my applications and improve upon them. The job search is an iterative process and takes time to find the right opportunities and the right fit, so it does require perseverance and patience.
